Type II / V Flex Circuit

Double-Sided
Flex Circuits

Two conductor layers with or without plated through holes — enabling crossover connections, two-sided component placement, and significantly greater circuit complexity.

Double-sided flexible circuits have two conductor layers that can be fabricated with or without plated through holes (PTH). The PTH construction (IPC Type II) is most common — providing termination pads on both sides for component placement on either face.

When constructed without plated through holes with connections accessible from one side only, the circuit is classified as IPC Type V (military spec). This is less common but available for specific design requirements.

One major advantage of double-sided construction is the ease of crossover connections — routing signals from one conductor layer to the other avoids routing conflicts that would be impossible in a single-layer design.

Many circuits that appear to need only a single conductor layer are actually built on double-sided substrates because they need one or two crossover connections. GCA Flex engineers evaluate your design and recommend the most cost-effective construction.

Common Questions

Double-Sided Flexible Circuits FAQs

What is the difference between Type II and Type V?
Type II has plated through holes connecting both conductor layers. Type V is double-sided construction without PTH — conductor features accessed from one side only. Type II is far more common.
Can components be placed on both sides?
Yes. Double-sided flex with PTH (Type II) provides pads on both sides, allowing components on either face. GCA Flex provides in-house assembly for both-sides population.
Why choose double-sided over single-sided flex?
Choose double-sided when your design requires crossover connections, higher conductor density, or component placement on both sides. Even one crossover connection typically requires double-sided construction.
What surface finishes are available?
ENIG, immersion silver, OSP, tin-lead, and selective gold. Multiple finishes can be applied to the same circuit — gold at contact fingers and ENIG at SMT pads on the same part.
